What makes a star "double"

A "double star" is simply two stars that appear close together in the sky. To the naked eye they usually merge into a single point of light; through binoculars or a telescope they split into two. How common are they?

Far more common than most people expect. Surveys of Sun-like stars find that roughly half live in multiple-star systems - pairs, triples or more. Our lone Sun is, in a sense, the unusual one. Some famous "stars" are secretly whole families:

  • Alpha Centauri, the nearest star system to the Sun, is a triple: two Sun-like stars plus the faint red dwarf Proxima Centauri.
  • Castor in Gemini looks like one star but is actually a system of six stars.

How to see a double star yourself

  1. Start with an easy one. Albireo and Mizar are forgiving and split at low magnification.
  2. Use enough aperture, not more magnification. Splitting close pairs is about steady air and clean optics more than raw power.
  3. Wait for steady "seeing". On turbulent nights stars shimmer and close pairs blur together; calm, transparent nights split them cleanly.
  4. Enjoy the colour. The contrast between a warm orange and a cool blue star is the real reward - it's most striking at modest magnification.
