What kind of star is Alpha Centauri?

Alpha Centauri, catalogued as Alpha Centauri (α Cen; Rigil Kentaurus is component A), appears in the official constellation Centaurus. Its apparent visual magnitude is −0.27 combined for A+B, while its estimated distance is 4.37 light-years for A+B. Astronomers classify the object as G2 V + K1 V; Proxima is M5.5 Ve. These labels describe temperature, luminosity class or system components; they should not be read as a claim that every naked-eye point is a single isolated star.

The coordinate pair RA 14h 39m 36.49s, Dec −60° 50′ 02.3″ fixes the object’s direction on the celestial sphere for the J2000 reference epoch. Right ascension works like celestial longitude measured in hours, while declination works like latitude north or south of the celestial equator. Proper motion and improved measurements can refine catalogue positions, but these coordinates are sufficiently precise for a finder chart or planetarium search.

The name Alpha Centauri

Rigil Kentaurus, the IAU name of component A, derives from an Arabic expression meaning “foot of the Centaur.” Component B is formally named Toliman.

Modern professional catalogues retain identifiers such as the Bayer designation alongside a proper name. The International Astronomical Union standardizes which name belongs to which component—an important distinction for systems whose combined light looks like one star from Earth.

How to find Alpha Centauri

Alpha and Beta Centauri form the Southern Pointers leading toward Crux. A modest telescope can split A and B when their separation is favourable. Proxima is in a separate field more than two degrees away and far too faint for unaided vision.

Visible south of roughly 29° N and circumpolar below about 29° S; best on southern autumn and winter evenings. Visibility on a particular night still depends on latitude, season, time, horizon obstructions, weather and local light pollution.   • Alpha Centauri is a hierarchical triple: the close naked-eye A–B pair and the widely separated red dwarf Proxima Centauri.
