The world's largest star register

Terms & Privacy

The plain-language rules of this site, and how we handle your data.

Who we are

Star-Register.eu is operated by Star Register SIA, a company registered in Latvia. We maintain a permanent, searchable register of symbolic star dedications and publish free astronomy resources: the star catalogue, the observatory directory, the stargazing places directory and the blog.

What the register is - and isn't

A Star-Register entry is a symbolic, commemorative dedication: a name you choose, recorded permanently against a real, visible star with genuine celestial coordinates and a unique registration number. It is not an official scientific designation. No star registry - ours included - is recognised by NASA, the International Astronomical Union or any governmental or scientific authority, because no such body assigns or sells star names. Star naming does not confer ownership of a star or any legal rights over it.

  • Every registered star is a real, catalogued star, verified against established astronomical catalogues.
  • Each name is checked against the register for duplicates before it is recorded.
  • Registration entries do not expire and can be looked up at any time by registration number.

Purchases and partner registries

Star naming is sold by our independent regional partner registries (for example LabelStars.com and StarRegistration.net - see all partners). Your purchase contract, payment, delivery, cancellation and refund rights are with the partner you buy from, under the terms shown on their site. The register records the dedication and issues the registration number; it does not process payments or issue certificates itself.

Using this site

  • The catalogue, directories and guides are provided free, for personal, non-commercial use.
  • Don't scrape at volumes that degrade the service, misrepresent the register's content, or attempt to disrupt or gain unauthorised access to it.
  • Directory information (opening hours, access, facilities) is compiled from public sources and can go out of date: always confirm with the venue before travelling.
  • Photographs on observatory and stargazing pages are used under their open licenses, with the author, license and source credited on each page.
  • The site and its content are provided "as is", without warranties; to the extent permitted by law we are not liable for indirect damages arising from use of the site.

Privacy policy

What we collect

  • Star lookups: registration-number searches are processed to return the result and are not linked to you.
  • Location: the "use my location" features (nearest observatory / stargazing place) run in your browser. Your position is used once for sorting and is never sent to or stored on our servers.
  • Server logs: like nearly every website, our infrastructure keeps short-lived technical logs (IP address, requested page) for security and reliability.

What we don't do

  • No advertising trackers, no sale of personal data, no marketing emails without your request.
  • No account system: browsing the site requires no login and no profile.

Embedded third-party content

Some pages embed content from third parties: location maps from OpenStreetMap, fonts from Google Fonts, country detection from Country.is, and an app-guide video hosted by our partner LabelStars. When your browser loads these, those providers receive standard technical data (such as your IP address) under their own privacy policies. Purchases made on partner sites are governed by the partner's privacy policy.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you can ask what personal data we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority; ours is the Latvian Data State Inspectorate.

Changes

We may update these terms and this policy as the site evolves; the current version always lives at this address. Significant changes will be noted on this page.
