About Burgsolms Observatory

The observatory is operated by Volkssternwarte Mittelhessen e.V., the Central Hesse Amateur Observatory association, and is dedicated to adult education in astronomy. It is the largest observatory in the state of Hesse, built around a 3.2-metre classic dome, and offers observation evenings, group tours and youth programmes.

History

Burgsolms Observatory opened in June 1965, built by the Astronomical Working Group Wetzlar. In 1982, an observation tower was added north of the main building to house a donated, restored Newton telescope capable of solar observation.

Alongside the restored Newton telescope used for solar observing, the observatory operates multiple telescopes housed within its landmark 3.2-metre dome, supporting its public and educational observing programme.
