Lambda Velorum has exhausted hydrogen in its core and expanded into a K-type supergiant. Its cooler photosphere produces the orange colour visible to the unaided eye, while the luminosity class Ib distinguishes it from ordinary giants such as Menkent. Suhail is an irregular variable: convection, pulsation and changes in the outer atmosphere can alter the measured light without a simple clock-like period. Interferometric and spectroscopic work on cool supergiants helps constrain their angular diameters, temperatures and mass-loss processes. Even though Suhail and nearby Vela stars form a coherent ship outline from Earth, their distances vary considerably, so the figure is not a gravitationally bound stellar association.

The name Suhail

Suhail is an Arabic-derived name historically shared by several southern stars. The IAU standard assigns the unqualified proper name Suhail to Lambda Velorum, avoiding the longer regional variants found in older catalogues.

Arabic navigators applied forms of Suhayl to bright southern stars that served as seasonal and directional markers. This produced several compound names in historical sources rather than one perfectly consistent identification. Lambda Velorum's modern name was standardized by the IAU. The star also belongs to Vela, the Sails, one of the sections created from the enormous classical Argo Navis still mapped today.

Modern professional catalogues retain identifiers such as the Bayer designation alongside a proper name. The International Astronomical Union standardizes which name belongs to which component—an important distinction for systems whose combined light looks like one star from Earth.

How to find Suhail

Use the False Cross and the brighter stars of Vela and Carina as guides. Suhail's warm orange colour contrasts strongly with the blue-white stars of the surrounding former Argo Navis. Its small irregular variations are better followed with repeated photometric estimates than on one night.
