Delta Velorum, catalogued as Delta Velorum (δ Vel; Alsephina is component Aa), appears in the official constellation Vela. Its apparent visual magnitude is about 1.96 combined; eclipses are shallow, while its estimated distance is about 80.6 light-years. Astronomers classify the object as A-type eclipsing binary plus a wider companion. These labels describe temperature, luminosity class or system components; they should not be read as a claim that every naked-eye point is a single isolated star.

The close Aa–Ab pair consists of rapidly rotating A-type stars whose orbit is viewed at just the right angle for one to pass partly in front of the other. This creates shallow eclipses and allows astronomers to derive unusually direct constraints on stellar radii, masses and temperatures. A wider component, Delta Velorum B, makes the system hierarchical. Interferometry has resolved the close orbit and exposed rotational distortion, adding an important test of models for hot, fast-spinning stars. An infrared excess once attributed to a large debris disc is now better explained in part by interaction between the stellar radiation and surrounding interstellar material, illustrating why multi-technique follow-up matters.

The name Delta Velorum

The system is commonly called Delta Velorum from its Bayer designation. The IAU-approved proper name Alsephina applies specifically to component Aa and derives from an Arabic term connected with the Ship.

Delta Velorum has long been used in southern navigation and forms the False Cross, but its eclipses escaped recognition until observations associated with the Galileo spacecraft revealed a brightness dip in 2000. Follow-up spectroscopy and ESO interferometry established the architecture of the nearby system. The component name Alsephina was standardized separately, so it should not automatically be applied to all blended light from Delta Velorum.

Modern professional catalogues retain identifiers such as the Bayer designation alongside a proper name. The International Astronomical Union standardizes which name belongs to which component—an important distinction for systems whose combined light looks like one star from Earth.

How to find Delta Velorum

Find the False Cross between Vela and Carina; Delta Velorum is one of its four corners. It remains a single bright point through small instruments. The eclipses are only a few hundredths of a magnitude, so a camera and stable comparison stars are more effective than the unaided eye.

A southern star, circumpolar below about 35° S and invisible from most of Europe and northern North America. Visibility on a particular night still depends on latitude, season, time, horizon obstructions, weather and local light pollution.
