The name Avior
Avior is a modern coined name, not an ancient one. It appeared in the British Air Almanac during the 1930s, when navigators needed distinct names for selected bright stars, and is now standardized by the IAU.
Unlike names transmitted from Greek or Arabic astronomy, Avior was created in the twentieth century. HM Nautical Almanac Office assembled practical navigation names for stars that lacked convenient traditional labels, and Avior entered the Air Almanac. It later became widely used in catalogues and navigation tables. The star's surrounding constellation, Carina, is the Keel of the ancient ship Argo Navis.
Modern professional catalogues retain identifiers such as the Bayer designation alongside a proper name. The International Astronomical Union standardizes which name belongs to which component—an important distinction for systems whose combined light looks like one star from Earth.
How to find Avior
Avior is one of the four stars of the False Cross, an asterism often confused with Crux. Compare its orange appearance with nearby blue-white stars. Binoculars show the dense Carina Milky Way behind it but cannot split the close spectroscopic pair.
