The name Naos

Naos is the Greek word for “ship.” It was adopted for Zeta Puppis in reference to Argo Navis, the great classical Ship later divided into Puppis, Carina and Vela.

Puppis represents the stern of Argo Navis, the huge Ptolemaic constellation that proved unwieldy on later charts. Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille's eighteenth-century subdivisions became standard, leaving Naos in Puppis while its name continued to recall the entire ship. Modern ultraviolet and X-ray observatories transformed it from a bright navigation landmark into a reference object for massive-star winds. That division remains official today.

Modern professional catalogues retain identifiers such as the Bayer designation alongside a proper name. The International Astronomical Union standardizes which name belongs to which component—an important distinction for systems whose combined light looks like one star from Earth.
