About this observatory

Yerevan Observatory is a cultural heritage monument and working astronomical facility in Yerevan, Armenia, operated by Yerevan State University.

About Yerevan Observatory

Built in 1933 to a 1921 design by the noted Armenian modernist architect A. Tamanyan, the observatory is as much an architectural landmark as a scientific one, with a rectangular layout topped by a movable dome featuring cylindrical, interconnected scales.

History

Astronomers Benjamin Markarian and Hayk Badalyan both worked at the observatory. Because observing conditions in Yerevan itself are not ideal, Armenian astronomers later established the more remote Byurakan Observatory, leaving Yerevan Observatory to become primarily a historic and educational site.

Location & getting there

The observatory sits in Yerevan, Armenia, surrounded by a botanical garden that also serves as a habitat for local birds, adding to its appeal as a green space within the city.
