The site began as the Meteorological Observatory of Serra do Pilar in 1913, before being renamed the Geophysical Institute of the University of Porto in 1946, reflecting its growing role in earthquake and weather monitoring alike.

History

A seismic station was installed at the site in 1963 by the US government together with the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, joining it to the World-Wide Standard Seismographic Network (WWSSN), a network of 120 stations worldwide. The station's international code is PTO.

Telescopes & research

Instruments at the site include two three-component seismographs alongside long-period and short-period seismometers, sensitive enough to also register everyday seismic noise from nearby bridges and city traffic. The station continues to collaborate with IPMA, Portugal's national meteorological and seismic agency.
