About this observatory

Puckett Observatory, in Mountain Town, Gilmer County, Georgia, is a private facility built and run by amateur astronomer Tim Puckett, dedicated almost entirely to hunting comets and supernovae.

About Puckett Observatory

Owned and operated by Tim Puckett, the observatory's work centres on the Puckett Observatory World Supernova Search, a project founded in 1998 whose astronomers have discovered 369 supernovae to date.

Telescopes & research

Beyond the raw discovery count, Puckett Observatory has contributed to the classification of Type Iax supernovae, a rare category that so far includes only seven confirmed members - SN 2002bp, 2003gq, 2005cc, 2006hn, 2007J, 2008ae and 2008ha. The observatory also caught SN 2012A in the galaxy NGC 3239, later featured as a NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day, and simultaneously detected SN 2005en and SN 2005eo in UGC 4132.

Location & getting there

The observatory is located in Mountain Town, Gilmer County, in the state of Georgia, United States.

Visiting Puckett Observatory

As a private, working research observatory, Puckett Observatory is not a general public visitor site. Its ongoing supernova search results are shared through its website, cometwatch.com.

See your named star from here

Puckett Observatory has spent decades finding faint, fast-changing objects, proof that its instruments are more than capable of tracking down the fixed coordinates of a star named through Star Register. Name a star or search the catalogue for one already registered.

Opening hours

Opening hours and public-visit programs vary by season. Check the official website and Google Maps for current times before you travel.
