Jones Observatory, formally the Clarence T. Jones Observatory, stands about 4.5 miles east of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus in Tennessee, one of the region's longest-running public observatories.
About Jones Observatory
The building was completed in 1936, funded through a Public Works Administration grant, and opened in 1938 under the name Brainard Observatory. It was renamed in 1947 to honour Clarence T. Jones, the local architect who championed the project and designed the building free of charge. At the time of its opening, it was the first large public observatory in the American South. It is owned and operated by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
