Japal-Rangapur Observatory sits between the villages of Japal and Rangapur in Telangana, India, where Osmania University has tracked variable stars, comets and eclipses for more than half a century.
About Japal-Rangapur Observatory
Operated by Osmania University, Japal-Rangapur Observatory is a working research station that grew out of the university's earlier Nizamiah Observatory. Its astronomers study variable stars, comets, lunar occultations and astrometry from a rural site chosen to escape city light pollution.
History
The observatory's roots go back to the Nizamiah Observatory, established in 1908 and formally transferred to the newly founded Osmania University in 1919. As Hyderabad grew and skies brightened, the university moved its telescopes to the current site between Japal and Rangapur in 1963, and installed a 48-inch (1.2-metre) reflecting telescope there in 1968-1969.
Telescopes & research
The 48-inch reflector remains the observatory's principal instrument, supporting photometry and spectroscopy alongside astrometric and occultation work. Over the decades, astronomers here have logged notable observations including the total solar eclipse of 1980, a multi-year study of Halley's Comet during its 1985-86 return, and some of the first images anywhere of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9's impact on Jupiter in July 1994.
Location & getting there
The observatory lies in rural Telangana, in the Asia region, chosen deliberately for its distance from Hyderabad's urban glow. Its coordinates place it roughly midway between the Japal and Rangapur villages, and the dark, open countryside around it is part of what makes it useful for research.
