On the wind-swept island of Heligoland, far out in the North Sea off Germany's coast, sits one of Europe's oldest ornithological research stations. Heligoland Bird Observatory has spent more than a century recording the birds that pass through this tiny outpost on their migratory routes.
About Heligoland Bird Observatory
The observatory studies bird migration using the island's position as a stopover point for species moving between breeding and wintering grounds. It is run by the Ornithologische Arbeitsgemeinschaft Helgoland e.V. (Heligoland Ornithological Working Group), which traces its own roots back to 1891.
History
Systematic bird study on the island began with the naturalist Heinrich Gätke, who started recording observations in 1841. The observatory itself was formally established in 1910 by the ornithologist Hugo Weigold, giving Heligoland a claim to being one of the first dedicated bird observatories in the world.
Telescopes & research
Rather than telescopes, the observatory's core tool is the Heligoland trap, a large funnel-shaped net used to catch and ring birds for study before releasing them. Over the decades, researchers here have logged more than 400 bird species crossing the island, making it one of the most closely watched migration bottlenecks in Europe.

Heligoland is a small, remote island in the North Sea, reached by ferry from the German mainland.
