The name Menkar
From Arabic al-minkhar, “the nostril,” referring to the star's position on the Sea Monster or Whale's head.
Menkar's Arabic anatomical name belongs to Cetus's head, while other stars outline a huge body stretching across the autumn sky. Bayer's Alpha designation did not follow strict brightness order, leaving Beta Ceti—Diphda—as the constellation's brightest star. Modern IAU standardization retains Menkar for Alpha Ceti. The name's survival also shows how Arabic positional descriptions were layered onto the older Greek sea-monster constellation during the transmission of astronomical tables.
