The name Diphda

From Arabic al-ḍifdiʿ al-thānī, “the second frog.” Deneb Kaitos, “tail of Cetus,” is a widely used historical alternative describing its constellation position.

The proper name Diphda belongs to an old Arabic “frog” pairing; Fomalhaut was historically the first frog. Deneb Kaitos instead identifies the tail of the Whale and remains familiar in atlases. The IAU chose Diphda as the standardized name for Beta Ceti, preserving one name while catalogues record the alternative. Both titles therefore encode different sky figures and demonstrate how a single physical star can accumulate several culturally distinct positional identities.

Modern professional catalogues retain identifiers such as the Bayer designation alongside a proper name. The International Astronomical Union standardizes which name belongs to which component—an important distinction for systems whose combined light looks like one star from Earth.
