Table Mountain · pronounced MEN-suh. Mensa is a very faint far-southern constellation created by Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille and named for Table Mountain above Cape Town, where he conducted his landmark southern survey. It is the only IAU constellation named for a terrestrial geographic feature. No Mensa star is brighter than magnitude 5, but the constellation includes part of the Large Magellanic Cloud’s outskirts and therefore contains rich star clusters invisible as a stick figure to the unaided eye.

About Mensa

Mensa is one of the 88 constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Its standard three-letter abbreviation is Men, and astronomers use the genitive form Mensae when naming stars associated with it. The constellation's reference position lies around right ascension 5.5 hours and declination -80 degrees.

Its location places it in the southern sky. For a typical mid-latitude observer, this part of the celestial sphere is especially well placed during winter evenings. Exact visibility depends on latitude, local horizon, date and time.

History and mythology of Mensa

A mountain beneath a celestial cloud

Lacaille named the figure Mons Mensae after Table Mountain. In his visual conception, the nearby Large Magellanic Cloud recalled the cloud that often spreads over the mountain’s summit like a tablecloth.

From Mons Mensae to Mensa

The original two-word Latin name was shortened to Mensa. Unlike Lacaille’s scientific instruments, this figure commemorated the observing location itself.

European naming and southern knowledge

The constellation’s formal history records an eighteenth-century European survey, not the first human knowledge of these stars or the Magellanic Clouds. Southern African peoples had their own sky knowledge long before IAU standardisation.

The modern astronomical region

The IAU adopted the three-letter abbreviation and standard constellation name in 1922. Eugène Delporte then published the coordinate boundaries in 1930, turning the inherited figure into an exact address for cataloguing every object inside it.

How to find Mensa

  1. Locate the Large Magellanic Cloud from a dark Southern Hemisphere site. Mensa lies mainly south of it, between Dorado, Hydrus, Octans, Chamaeleon and Volans.
  2. Alpha, Gamma and Beta Mensae are all near fifth magnitude and make no forceful shape. Use binoculars and plot them against the Cloud’s southern edge.
  3. December and January evenings are convenient. Mensa is circumpolar from much of the Southern Hemisphere and invisible from most northern latitudes.
  4. Explore the LMC-side clusters with a wide-field telescope, carefully checking whether each target falls in Mensa or neighbouring Dorado because the galaxy crosses the boundary.
