the male water snake · pronounced HIGH-drus. Hydrus is a small far-southern constellation introduced from Dutch navigators’ observations at the end of the sixteenth century. It occupies the sky between Achernar, the south celestial pole and the Magellanic Clouds, forming a useful triangle with Beta, Alpha and Gamma Hydri. Unlike ancient Hydra, Hydrus has no classical Greek pedigree; its history belongs to European mapping of southern stars already known within Indigenous southern sky traditions.

About Hydrus

Hydrus is one of the 88 constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Its standard three-letter abbreviation is Hyi, and astronomers use the genitive form Hydri when naming stars associated with it. The constellation's reference position lies around right ascension 2.3 hours and declination -72 degrees.

Its location places it in the southern sky. For a typical mid-latitude observer, this part of the celestial sphere is especially well placed during autumn evenings. Exact visibility depends on latitude, local horizon, date and time.

History and mythology of Hydrus

A southern navigation-era constellation

Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman recorded the southern stars during Dutch voyages, and Petrus Plancius placed Hydrus on a 1598 globe. Johann Bayer then published it in Uranometria in 1603.

Hydrus is not Hydra

The Latin name is the masculine form for a water snake, while Hydra is the much larger ancient constellation. They occupy entirely different regions and should never share one page or diagram merely because English translations are similar.

A circumpolar southern field

Much of Hydrus is circumpolar from mid-southern latitudes. Its proximity to the Small Magellanic Cloud makes it a convenient orientation region even though the famous dwarf galaxy itself lies mainly in Tucana.

The modern astronomical region

The IAU adopted the three-letter abbreviation and standard constellation name in 1922. Eugène Delporte then published the coordinate boundaries in 1930, turning the inherited figure into an exact address for cataloguing every object inside it.

How to find Hydrus

  1. Begin with brilliant Achernar at the southern end of Eridanus, then look south toward the Small Magellanic Cloud. Hydrus occupies the intervening polarward sky.
  2. Beta Hydri, about magnitude 2.8, is the closest bright naked-eye star to the south celestial pole; Alpha and Gamma complete a broad triangle.
  3. The constellation is best from the Southern Hemisphere and is invisible from most northern mid-latitudes. Spring and early-summer evenings offer convenient orientations.
  4. Use binoculars to separate the triangle from neighbouring Tucana, Mensa, Dorado and Reticulum before attempting its faint galaxies.
