the dolphinfish · pronounced doh-RAY-doh. Dorado is a far-southern constellation introduced on late-sixteenth-century Dutch star charts and popularized by Johann Bayer’s Uranometria in 1603. Its name refers to the dolphinfish, also called mahi-mahi, rather than the marine mammal. The naked-eye outline is subdued, but the official region is astrophysically exceptional because it contains most of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Within that neighboring dwarf galaxy, the Tarantula Nebula is the Local Group’s most vigorous star-forming complex and can be seen without optical aid under excellent southern skies. Supernova 1987A erupted nearby, providing astronomers with the closest observed supernova since the telescope’s invention. Alpha Doradus and Beta Doradus help define the constellation between Reticulum, Pictor and Mensa. Dorado is best placed on Southern Hemisphere summer evenings and never rises from many northern locations. Its European fish figure overlaps sky understood through separate southern Indigenous traditions; those systems should be named on their own terms. Binoculars show the Large Magellanic Cloud as structured rather than uniformly hazy, while telescopes resolve clusters and glowing nebulae throughout it.
