the wolf · pronounced LOO-pus. Lupus is a southern Milky Way constellation between Centaurus and Scorpius. Its bright blue stars make a richer naked-eye pattern than many southern figures, although ancient catalogues described it simply as a wild animal held by Centaurus rather than specifically a wolf. The region contains young members of the nearby Scorpius–Centaurus association, several globular clusters and the bipolar Retina Nebula IC 4406.

About Lupus

Lupus is one of the 88 constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Its standard three-letter abbreviation is Lup, and astronomers use the genitive form Lupi when naming stars associated with it. The constellation's reference position lies around right ascension -8.8 hours and declination -35 degrees.

Its location places it in the southern sky. For a typical mid-latitude observer, this part of the celestial sphere is especially well placed during spring evenings. Exact visibility depends on latitude, local horizon, date and time.

History and mythology of Lupus

The animal carried by Centaurus

Ptolemy catalogued these stars as a beast associated with Centaurus. Greek descriptions did not consistently identify a wolf; the Latin name Lupus and later atlas tradition made that animal specific.

Sacrifice imagery and its limits

European maps often show Centaurus carrying Lupus toward the altar Ara, leading to sacrificial interpretations. This is a historical iconographic tradition, not an astronomical property of the official sky regions.

A nearby nursery of massive stars

Many bright Lupus stars belong to or lie near the Scorpius–Centaurus OB association, while Lupus molecular clouds host ongoing low-mass star formation. The apparent figure therefore overlays a scientifically important nearby complex.

The modern astronomical region

The IAU adopted the three-letter abbreviation and standard constellation name in 1922. Eugène Delporte then published the coordinate boundaries in 1930, turning the inherited figure into an exact address for cataloguing every object inside it.

How to find Lupus

  1. Find Antares and the curved body of Scorpius, then locate the two bright Pointer stars Alpha and Beta Centauri. Lupus fills the Milky Way area between them.
  2. Alpha and Beta Lupi form the easiest northern pair; Gamma, Delta and Epsilon extend a bright zigzag southward.
  3. April through July evenings favour Lupus. It is prominent from the Southern Hemisphere but remains low from northern mid-latitudes and partly hidden farther north.
  4. NGC 5986 lies west of the main pattern and can be seen as a round haze in small telescopes; IC 4406 requires more aperture or imaging.
