the scales · pronounced LEE-bruh. Libra is a zodiac constellation between Virgo and Scorpius. Its brightest stars retain Arabic-derived names meaning the northern and southern claws because Greek astronomy often treated this region as the claws of Scorpius. Roman-era tradition established the balanced scales as an independent figure, and today Libra is both an irregular IAU sky region and one of the constellations crossed by the ecliptic. Zubenelgenubi is a wide binocular double, while NGC 5897 is its leading deep-sky target.

About Libra

Libra is one of the 88 constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Its standard three-letter abbreviation is Lib, and astronomers use the genitive form Librae when naming stars associated with it. The constellation's reference position lies around right ascension -8.6 hours and declination -26 degrees.

Its location places it in the southern sky. For a typical mid-latitude observer, this part of the celestial sphere is especially well placed during spring evenings. Exact visibility depends on latitude, local horizon, date and time.

History and mythology of Libra

From the Scorpion’s claws to scales

Babylonian traditions associated the area with both a balance and the Scorpion’s claws. In much Greek usage the stars belonged to Scorpius, while Roman authors strongly promoted Libra as a separate balance; this layered history survives in the stellar names.

Libra in the zodiac

The Sun passes through the official constellation during part of each year, making Libra one of the astronomical zodiac constellations. The astrological sign is a conventional 30-degree sector and is not identical to Libra’s modern IAU boundary.

The equinox has moved

The September equinox lay in Libra in antiquity, strengthening balance symbolism in later explanations. Axial precession has since shifted the equinox into Virgo, illustrating why seasonal coordinate relationships change over millennia.

The modern astronomical region

The IAU adopted the three-letter abbreviation and standard constellation name in 1922. Eugène Delporte then published the coordinate boundaries in 1930, turning the inherited figure into an exact address for cataloguing every object inside it.

How to find Libra

  1. Find orange Antares in Scorpius and bright Spica in Virgo. Libra occupies the darker region between them, north of the scorpion’s claws.
  2. Zubenelgenubi and Zubeneschamali form a broad northwest–southeast pair. Add Brachium and Upsilon Librae to recognize the rough quadrilateral.
  3. May through July evenings are best from mid-northern latitudes; look low in the south after darkness. Southern observers see Libra much higher.
  4. Binoculars readily split the wide components around Zubenelgenubi. NGC 5897 needs a telescope, dark adaptation and a chart near the Ophiuchus border.
