It occupies southern Milky Way between Scorpius and Centaurus, where its outline is best understood as a guide to a formally bounded region rather than a physical group of nearby stars. Gamma2 Normae and Epsilon Normae provide practical anchors, while NGC 6087 gives observers a destination beyond the line figure. The stars only appear together from Earth: they lie at very different distances and move independently through the Galaxy. Its early-modern name reflects the European chart-making period in which southern or previously unfilled sky regions were formalised. Its standard three-letter abbreviation is Nor, and astronomers use the genitive form Normae when naming stars associated with it. The constellation's reference position lies around right ascension -7.8 hours and declination -52 degrees.

Origin and naming

Norma entered the Western constellation record through Lacaille,1750s. Its name means the carpenter’s square; historical artwork varies and should not be confused with the IAU boundary adopted for positional astronomy.

The IAU standardised constellation names in 1922, and Eugène Delporte published the modern boundaries in 1930. Every coordinate inside that polygon belongs to this constellation, including stars and galaxies unrelated to its traditional stick figure.
