The name Zubeneschamali

From Arabic al-zubānā al-shamāliyy, “the northern claw.” Variant spellings reflect different transliterations of the same historical phrase.

The paired names Zubeneschamali and Zubenelgenubi preserve Libra's earlier identity as Scorpius's northern and southern claws. Roman emphasis on the scales ultimately produced the separate constellation Libra.
