Osservatorio astronomico di Remanzacco, known as StAR (Stazione Astronomica di Remanzacco), is an amateur research observatory in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of north-eastern Italy.

About Osservatorio astronomico di Remanzacco

The observatory is run by the Associazione Friulana di Astronomia e Meteorologia (AFAM), founded in 1969, with the StAR station itself established in 1989. Despite being an amateur facility, it has an unusually strong research record for its size.

History

Since opening in 1989, StAR has built a reputation in the amateur astronomy world, culminating in its team becoming the first amateur observatory anywhere to discover a nova in the Andromeda Galaxy.

Telescopes & research

The site uses a 185mm refractor telescope alongside a 450mm telescope housed under a sliding roof. Between 1997 and 2007, observers at Remanzacco discovered nine asteroids, in addition to the notable Andromeda Galaxy nova find.
