Mead Observatory

Mead Observatory, now known as WestRock Observatory, has been introducing the public to the night sky in Columbus, Georgia since 1996, and remains an active hub for both research and community outreach.

About Mead Observatory

The observatory is operated by Columbus State University's Coca-Cola Space Science Center at 701 Front Avenue in Columbus, Georgia, and carries the Minor Planet Center designation W22. Formerly known as Mead Observatory, it was renamed WestRock Observatory, though both names are still associated with the site.

History

The observatory was established in 1996 and has run active night sky and solar study programs for students and the general public ever since.

Telescopes & research

Its equipment can be controlled and monitored remotely by faculty and astronomers, supporting research alongside its public education mission. The observatory also runs mobile astronomy programs, including "Astronomy Nights" events at Callaway Gardens, F. D. Roosevelt State Park, and Providence Canyon State Park, extending its reach across the Georgia/Alabama area.
