Lågskär is a small island roughly 24 kilometres south of Mariehamn in the Åland Islands, part of Finland's Lemland municipality. Rather than a stargazing site, it is a bird observatory and ringing station recognised as an Important Bird Area for its role as a key breeding and migration stop in the Baltic Sea.
History
A lighthouse beacon was first built on Lågskär in 1840, and the current lighthouse tower, standing 33 metres tall, dates from 1920. The light was automated in 1961, freeing up the former keepers' residences, which now house visiting ornithologists. The bird-ringing station itself was established in 1964 and has operated on the island ever since.
