About Kalyazin Radio Astronomy Observatory

The observatory's centrepiece is the RT-64 radio telescope, a 64-metre (210-foot) diameter dish completed in 1992 as an investment in Soviet and later Russian radio astronomy and space communication. It is operated by the Special Design Bureau of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute (OKB MEI).

History

Construction finished in 1992, and the observatory became part of Russia's Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) network, a system of widely separated radio telescopes working together to achieve extremely high resolution. At its peak, more than 300 scientists and engineers worked at the facility. In more recent years, reduced investment and the harsh Russian winters have left the site with limited operations and visible corrosion on its structure.

The RT-64 dish has been used to study quasars, pulsars, and interstellar matter as part of VLBI observation campaigns, work that requires precise, coordinated timing between multiple telescopes across large distances to combine into a single, high-resolution view. At its busiest, the site supported the work of over 300 scientists and engineers.
