About Judson B. Coit Observatory

Owned and operated by Boston University, the observatory supports the university's Department of Astronomy, serving undergraduate and graduate courses as well as observing projects run by the Boston University Astronomical Society.

History

The observatory is named for Judson Boardman Coit, the first Professor of Astronomy appointed by Boston University. It originally stood on the roof of the College of Liberal Arts Building on Boylston Street, where the university was based from the early 20th century until the late 1940s, when it moved with the college to its current home on Commonwealth Avenue.

Visiting Judson B. Coit Observatory

Public Open Nights are held most Wednesday evenings throughout the year, weather permitting, and are free to attend.
