The observatory was named in 2012 after John Beckman, an Emeritus Research Professor at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), where he took up the position of Research Coordinator in 1984 and spent more than 30 years in astrophysics research and in promoting astronomy education and outreach.
