Buried deep in the Antarctic ice at the South Pole, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory doesn't use lenses or mirrors at all — it detects the faint flashes left behind by neutrinos, some of the universe's most elusive particles, passing through a cubic kilometre of ice.
About IceCube Neutrino Observatory
IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a neutrino detector built into the ice at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica. Developed by the University of Wisconsin–Madison, it is a recognised CERN experiment (RE10) and one of the most distinctive astronomical facilities on Earth, given that it observes the sky by looking down through the ice rather than up through the air.
History
Construction finished on 18 December 2010, completing an array of thousands of optical sensors sunk into holes melted through the ice with hot water drills. An approved upgrade was successfully deployed in February 2026, the observatory's first major expansion since it began operating some fifteen years earlier.
Instruments & research
IceCube's sensor array is a lattice of digital optical modules (DOMs) strung on cables at depths between 1,450 and 2,450 metres, spread across a full cubic kilometre of ice. Each DOM pairs a photomultiplier tube with its own data-acquisition computer, together watching for the faint light created when a neutrino occasionally collides with an ice molecule. The observatory is designed to trace these events back to point sources of teraelectronvolt-range neutrinos, helping researchers study the most energetic processes in the universe.

IceCube sits at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica, one of the most remote research sites on the planet, reachable only by scheduled flights during the short Antarctic summer season and normally restricted to research personnel.
