The property was designed by architect Professor Robert Adam for the Stockdale family, drawing inspiration from Christopher Wren's Royal Observatory at Greenwich, built in 1675. It features matching quoins, brickwork and domed turret rooms, complete with ball-and-mast arrangements that also function as lightning conductors. It sits around a mile from the historic Herstmonceux Observatory, which relocated to Cambridge in 1990.
