Unlike a stargazing observatory, this institute is a Research Centre of Excellence focused on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and climate change. Its work spans four main domains: climate studies, risk and society, tectonics, and volcano research, aiming to build the scientific understanding needed to mitigate natural hazards and climate-related disasters in the region.
History
The observatory was established in 2009 as a dedicated Research Centre of Excellence at Nanyang Technological University, bringing together earth scientists to study the geological forces that shape Southeast Asia.
