Deerlick Observatory

Deerlick Astronomy Village is a dedicated dark-sky observing site in rural Taliaferro County, Georgia, built by amateur astronomers who wanted somewhere genuinely dark to point their telescopes.

About Deerlick Astronomy Village

The village was founded in 2006 by members of the Atlanta Astronomy Club, about 100 miles east of Atlanta. It takes its name from the Pegasus cluster of galaxies. Members cleared an 11-acre field, known as Grier's Field, for tents and RVs, and the site now includes bathrooms, showers and a clubhouse.

Location & getting there

Deerlick sits near Sharon in Taliaferro County, Georgia, at an elevation of roughly 550-600 feet. Strict lighting rules keep the site dark: no white lights are permitted after sunset, and only red LEDs are allowed on the access roads.

Visiting Deerlick Astronomy Village

Membership runs $60-$85 per year, and camping costs $5-$20 per night. The site is built for overnight stargazing trips rather than a quick daytime visit, so check the Deerlick group's website for current membership and camping details before you go.
