About Borok Magnetic Observatory

The observatory was founded in 1957 by the Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as part of the worldwide programme of stations set up during the International Geophysical Year. Rather than tracking stars, it monitors the Earth's own geomagnetic field.

Telescopes & research

Borok specialises in measuring ultra-low-frequency geomagnetic pulsations, along with geomagnetic field variations, telluric currents, atmospheric electricity, and related meteorological parameters. In April 2004 it gained INTERMAGNET certification, becoming one of only three magnetic observatories in Russia to hold this status, and the only one in European Russia.
