The name Hamal
Hamal comes from Arabic raʾs al-ḥamal, “head of the ram.” Its position at Aries’s head preserves the same animal figure expressed by the constellation’s Latin name.
More than two millennia ago the March equinox lay in Aries, near Hamal’s part of the sky, making the Ram a major calendar marker. Axial precession has since shifted the equinox into Pisces even though the astrological phrase “first point of Aries” persists.
