Almach is a showpiece double at the end of Andromeda’s star chain. A small telescope separates a golden evolved giant from a much bluer companion; deeper measurements reveal that the blue point is itself multiple, so the apparently simple pair contains at least four stars.

What kind of star is Almach?

Almach, catalogued as Gamma Andromedae A (γ And A), appears in the official constellation Andromeda. Its apparent visual magnitude is about 2.10 combined, while its estimated distance is about 350 light-years. Astronomers classify the object as K3 IIb giant plus hot multiple companion system. These labels describe temperature, luminosity class or system components; they should not be read as a claim that every naked-eye point is a single isolated star.

The orange primary, Gamma Andromedae A, is an evolved bright giant. The blue visual companion, Gamma Andromedae B, is not one star: it contains a close pair, and another component makes the wider system at least quadruple. The strong eyepiece colours arise from genuine temperature differences, although human colour contrast can exaggerate their saturation. Orbital periods span from years in the close subsystem to thousands of years for the wide visual pair. Almach therefore gives amateur observers a direct view of one hierarchical level while spectroscopy and high-resolution techniques reveal the others.

The coordinate pair RA 02h 03m 53.95s, Dec +42° 19′ 47.0″ fixes the object's direction on the celestial sphere for the J2000 reference epoch. Right ascension works like celestial longitude measured in hours, while declination works like latitude north or south of the celestial equator. Proper motion and improved measurements can refine catalogue positions, but these coordinates are sufficiently precise for a finder chart or planetarium search.

The name Almach

Almach derives from Arabic ʿanāq al-arḍ, referring to a caracal or desert lynx. Spellings such as Almaak occur historically; the IAU standardized Almach.

The traditional name’s animal reference does not derive from the Greek Andromeda story, another example of layered sky cultures. Bayer designated the object Gamma Andromedae. William Herschel included it among the striking coloured double stars he studied, and later observers mapped the hierarchy inside the blue companion. In 2016, the IAU Working Group standardized Almach specifically for component A; Almaak remains a recognizable historical spelling.

Modern professional catalogues retain identifiers such as the Bayer designation alongside a proper name. The International Astronomical Union standardizes which name belongs to which component—an important distinction for systems whose combined light looks like one star from Earth.

How to find Almach

Trace Andromeda’s chain northeast through Mirach to its bright endpoint, Almach. A small telescope at about 75× splits a golden primary from a blue companion, one of the finest colour-contrast doubles. The blue component is itself a close multiple beyond ordinary visual resolution.
