The name Alphard
Alphard comes from Arabic al-fard, “the solitary one.” The description is immediately recognizable at the eyepiece because the star stands relatively alone in a broad, sparse region of Hydra.
Hydra's water-serpent figure appears among Ptolemy's 48 constellations. Arabic observers emphasized Alpha Hydrae's isolated setting with a name meaning “the solitary one,” while European tradition also called it Cor Hydrae, the Heart of the Hydra. Bayer's Alpha designation appropriately belongs to the constellation's brightest star. The IAU now standardizes Alphard as its proper name for consistent international astronomical use today.

Find the Sickle of Leo, then look southwest into a less crowded sky for a lone orange second-magnitude star. Alternatively, trace Hydra from the small head below Cancer. Alphard is visible through city light pollution, but a dark sky makes its isolation and warm colour far more striking.
