A constellation carrying two others

The head rises long before the tail because the constellation spans such a great range of right ascension. No single evening places every part equally high, making Hydra best explored in sections through late northern winter and spring.

The IAU adopted the three-letter abbreviation and standard constellation name in 1922. Eugène Delporte then published the coordinate boundaries in 1930, turning the inherited figure into an exact address for cataloguing every object inside it.
How to find Hydra
- Find the small ring-like head of Hydra below Cancer and east of Procyon. From there follow a crooked line southeast to orange Alphard.
- Use Alphard as the central checkpoint; its isolation is more distinctive than the faint line traditionally drawn through Hydra’s body.
- Continue east below Sextans, Crater and Corvus toward Libra. A wide-field chart is essential because the full figure cannot fit comfortably in one binocular field.
- M48 is an easy binocular target west of Alphard; M68 lies below Corvus, while M83 is much farther southeast near the Centaurus border.
