the Indian · pronounced IN-dus. Indus is a faint southern constellation created during the European age of oceanic exploration. Its brightest star, Alpha Indi, reaches only third magnitude, and the rest form a subdued wedge between Microscopium, Grus, Tucana, Pavo and Octans. The historical image depicts an Indigenous person through a late-sixteenth-century European lens, so modern presentation needs context rather than repeating the artwork uncritically. Telescopic highlights include the sculptured galaxy NGC 7049 and nearby dwarf galaxy IC 5152.

Indus is one of the 88 constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Its standard three-letter abbreviation is Ind, and astronomers use the genitive form Indi when naming stars associated with it. The constellation's reference position lies around right ascension -2.8 hours and declination -56 degrees.

Its location places it in the southern sky. For a typical mid-latitude observer, this part of the celestial sphere is especially well placed during summer evenings. Exact visibility depends on latitude, local horizon, date and time.

History and mythology of Indus

From voyage observations to Uranometria

The stars were recorded by Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman and mapped by Petrus Plancius in 1598. Johann Bayer’s Uranometria of 1603 established Indus in influential European atlases.

A historically loaded figure

The Latin Indus was used broadly by European chartmakers for an Indigenous person, and early illustrations vary in dress, weapons and implied origin. Those images document colonial-era European representation, not a specific community’s own astronomy.

The official constellation today

Modern astronomy uses Indus only as the proper name of a coordinate region and the abbreviation Ind. Scientific catalogues do not depend on the human figure drawn in historical atlases.

The modern astronomical region

The IAU adopted the three-letter abbreviation and standard constellation name in 1922. Eugène Delporte then published the coordinate boundaries in 1930, turning the inherited figure into an exact address for cataloguing every object inside it.

How to find Indus

  1. From southern skies, identify bright Alpha Pavonis in Pavo and Alnair in Grus; faint Indus lies south and west of the line between them.
  2. Start with orange Alpha Indi, then use binoculars to pick out Beta and Theta Indi. Do not expect the stars to form an obvious human outline.
  3. August through October evenings are favourable from the Southern Hemisphere. The constellation remains very low or invisible from most northern locations.
  4. NGC 7049 lies near the northern part of Indus; star-hop from Alpha Indi with a detailed chart and use moderate aperture under dark skies.
