The area had not been empty in every earlier atlas: some stars were associated with the tail of Piscis Austrinus. Lacaille’s new arrangement prevailed in later European mapping.

- Find Fomalhaut in Piscis Austrinus and the curved stars of Capricornus. Microscopium lies south of Capricornus and west of Grus.
