Periodic Doppler shifts reveal an unseen close companion, making Peacock a spectroscopic binary. The name Peacock

Peacock is an English proper name coined for navigational use in the 1930s. It directly translates the constellation Pavo's bird rather than preserving an ancient Arabic or Greek star name.

Pavo was introduced to European celestial cartography from observations made during Dutch voyages to the southern seas at the end of the sixteenth century. Alpha Pavonis initially lacked a widely used traditional proper name. The British Air Almanac supplied “Peacock” for practical navigation, and the IAU later standardized it. The modern origin should be stated clearly rather than presented as ancient folklore.

Modern professional catalogues retain identifiers such as the Bayer designation alongside a proper name. The International Astronomical Union standardizes which name belongs to which component—an important distinction for systems whose combined light looks like one star from Earth.
