South of the Bavarian town of Buchloe, Volkssternwarte Buchloe has been welcoming amateur astronomers and the public since 1987, run entirely by local astronomy enthusiasts.
About Volkssternwarte Buchloe
The observatory sits at an elevation of about 636 metres and is operated by the Astronomische Gesellschaft Buchloe e.V., founded in 1997 as successor to the earlier Sternfreunde der VHS Buchloe group. It holds the IAU observatory code 215.
History
A working group of amateur astronomers formed in 1981, and the observatory was officially inaugurated on 17 May 1987, its original building a simple observation hut with a sliding roof.
Telescopes & research
Members carry out astrophotography, solar observation and deep-sky imaging, alongside more technical work such as brightness measurements and the astrometry of comets, asteroids and variable stars.
