About The Voeikov Main Geophysical Observatory
Founded on 1 April 1849 by decree of Emperor Nicholas I, the observatory was originally known as the Main Physical Observatory until 1924. In 1949, on its centennial, it was renamed for A. I. Voeikov, the founder of Russian climatology.
History
Since its founding the observatory has served as the research and methodological centre for Russia's national weather observation network, and it functioned as the headquarters of the country's meteorological service until 1929. It has been a pioneering centre for Russian studies in climatology, dynamic meteorology, aerology, actinometry, atmospheric physics, boundary layer physics, atmospheric diffusion, and pollution research.
