Sherwood Observatory is owned and operated by the Mansfield and Sutton Astronomical Society. Its main dome is 6.5 metres (21 feet) in diameter and houses a 0.61-metre (2-foot) Newtonian reflecting telescope, a serious instrument for an amateur society. A club meeting room on site doubles as a lecture theatre for public open evenings.
