About this observatory

On China's Shandong Peninsula near Weihai, Shandong University's observatory has run a one-meter optical telescope since 2008, using the coastal site's dark skies for research into sky brightness and stellar motion.

About Shandong University observatory

Known as the Weihai Observatory of Shandong University, the site is built around a one-meter optical telescope that has been in operation since 2008.

Telescopes & research

Astronomers here have used the telescope to build a large sky brightness database, drawing on more than 28,000 images collected over 161 nights to study twilight conditions and variations in night-sky brightness. The observatory also runs a programme measuring precise radial velocities of bright giant stars.

Location & getting there

The observatory is located on the Shandong Peninsula near Weihai, in eastern China, part of the wider Asia region.

Visiting Shandong University observatory

As a university research facility, public visiting arrangements aren't confirmed; check with Shandong University or search online for current access before planning a trip.

See your named star from here

The same one-meter telescope used to track sky brightness and stellar radial velocities could, in principle, be pointed at the coordinates of a star named through Star Register. Look yours up in the catalogue.
