About Planetarium Bad Salzungen

The planetarium opened on 7 October 1984 with a projector dating from 1951 that was partially handmade by Carl-Zeiss-Jena, a striking piece of astronomical history still in use. Its dome measures 8 metres in diameter and 6.5 metres in height. In 2022, a Fulldome-Digital projector was added, bringing modern digital shows alongside the historic equipment.

History

Since opening in 1984, the planetarium has been operated since 1996 by the Volkshochschule Wartburgkreis, a regional vocational school, which runs its public programs.

The planetarium sits at Burgseestraße 7a in Bad Salzungen, Germany, at an elevation of 257 metres, right by the Burgsee lake within Rathenaupark.
