Lviv Polytechnic Observatory is located on the roof of the main building at Lviv Polytechnic National University, at 8 Kyryla i Mefodiya Street in Lviv, Ukraine.

History

The observatory traces back to 1877, when it was established by the Geodesy and Spherical Astronomy Department of the Lviv Technical Academy — the first astronomical observatory in Western Ukraine. It became operational in its current form by 1913–1914, following new construction completed in 1912 that added a Zeiss refractor telescope. Its growth mirrored that of the institution itself, whose enrollment rose from 175 students in 1889–90 to 1,865 by 1913–14, making it the second-largest higher technical school in the Austrian Empire at the time.

The 1912 rebuild equipped the observatory with a Zeiss refractor telescope, reflecting the growing scientific ambitions of the Geodesy and Spherical Astronomy Department that founded it.
