About this observatory

Lomnický Štít Observatory sits at the summit of Lomnický Štít, 2,632 metres up in Slovakia's High Tatras, one of the highest astronomical sites in Europe.

About Lomnický Štít Observatory

The observatory is operated by the Astronomical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (Astronomický ústav Slovenskej akadémie vied) and occupies one of the most dramatic mountain-peak locations of any observatory on the continent.

History

Construction on the peak, including a rope funicular to reach it, took place in 1939 and 1940, and regular meteorological observations have been recorded here since 1940. A dedicated astronomical centre, the Laboratory of Physics and Cosmic Radiation, was established at the site in 1962, and Lomnický Štít has contributed to long-running data collection on green coronal emission line intensities since 1939.
