History

The garden itself dates to 1798, when it was created by royal order of the Portuguese Crown, and it opened to the public in 1825 as São Paulo's first public garden. The astronomical observatory was added during the provincial presidency of João Teodoro, between 1872 and 1875, doubling as the city's first meteorological observatory. Locals nicknamed its 20-metre tower "Canudo do Dr. João Teodoro." The garden later hosted a visit from Emperor Dom Pedro II in 1846 and staged São Paulo's first electric light exhibition in 1883.
