Jaipur Magnetic Observatory

Jaipur Magnetic Observatory is a geomagnetic monitoring station in Jaipur, India, operated by the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG).

About Jaipur Magnetic Observatory

Founded in 1975, the observatory was established to fill a geographic gap between the existing magnetic observatories at Alibag and Sabhawala. It was created as a collaborative project with IZMIRAN of the USSR, forming part of a wider effort along the 145° geomagnetic meridian to build a network stretching from the magnetic equator to the magnetic pole and to better understand the global Sq current system.

History

The observatory operated from 1975 to 1988 before being restarted in 2002, and it now holds official INTERMAGNET Observatory certification, meeting the international standards set by that network for geomagnetic data quality.

Telescopes & research

Rather than optical telescopes, Jaipur Magnetic Observatory uses a suite of magnetic instruments: a suspended tri-axial fluxgate magnetometer (FGE model), a DI-Flux magnetometer, an Overhauser effect proton scalar magnetometer (GEM System GSM-90), and a proton precession magnetometer, all used to continuously record variations in Earth's magnetic field.
